Weddding Dress Shopping Without the Pressure: Inside Shade Bridal

Wedding dress shopping is supposed to be fun.

And yet somehow it can turn into What style am I? What suits me? Do I need to cry? Am I supposed to know what a Basque waist is? And why have I saved 847 completely different dresses on Instagram?

For Episode 3 of Bridal IRL, we sat down with Emma Castle from Shade Bridal in Nottingham to talk about creating a bridal experience that feels a whole lot less stressful.

And Emma knows a thing or two about staying calm under pressure. Before bridal, she spent 13 years working in aerospace. Yep. We weren't expecting that one either.

From aerospace to bridal. Obviously.

Emma originally came to Nottingham to study fashion and textiles at Nottingham Trent University, before a career that included visual merchandising, designing and making handbags and, eventually, aerospace.

But bridal had always been somewhere in the background. In 2018, Emma decided it was time to come back to the creative world she'd started in. She initially planned to open a bridal store from scratch, before a chance connection introduced her to the previous owner of Shade. Emma took over the business and, in her own words, changed pretty much everything apart from the name.

And weirdly, she says some of the most useful skills she brought with her came from aerospace: organisation, problem solving, dealing with pressure and staying calm. Which makes quite a lot of sense when you're dealing with weddings.

Your body language is snitching on you

One thing becomes pretty obvious when talking to Emma: she loves brides. She loves hearing about the wedding, understanding the vision and watching someone gradually figure out what they actually like.

And she's learned not to listen only to what a bride says.

“It doesn't matter what comes out of your mouth, your body language speaks a thousand words.”

So if you're standing in a wedding dress telling everyone “yeah, I really like it...” while your face is giving 😐...

Your bridal stylist probably knows.

Emma's approach at Shade is deliberately relaxed. Brides are given space to look through the dresses, try different ideas and change direction as the appointment develops. Sometimes they find the one. Sometimes they go home and sleep on it.Both are absolutely fine. As Emma puts it, there isn't a right or wrong way to find your wedding dress. There's just your way.

Want something a little different?

That's also become a big part of what Shade is about. Rather than filling the rails with designers brides can find in stores everywhere, Emma actively searches for labels that are harder to discover in the UK. She spent around 18 months stalking Californian designer Moonlight Bridal on Instagram before eventually getting them to send an agent to meet her.

Commitment. We respect it. Shade went on to stock Moonlight Bridal and Val Stefani, alongside designers including Mikaella, Paloma and New Zealand label Atelier Wu.

Emma is particularly interested in quality, construction, where dresses are made and the people behind the brands. Many of the designers she works with also allow customisation, meaning a bride might love the skirt of one design but want different straps, a different neckline or even elements from another dress. Because sometimes your dream dress is almost on the rail. It just needs to become a little more you.

So, what's happening with wedding dresses right now?

We couldn't let Emma escape without talking trends. Although, plot twist: she doesn't really follow them. Emma prefers to look at what brides have actually been asking for rather than immediately jumping onto every new bridal trend. That said, she thinks drop waists and Basque bodices have some serious staying power, while at Shade the battle between minimal and maximal is basically a draw. Plain, modern dresses? Very much still happening.

Lace, glitter and sparkle? Also very much happening. And Emma freely admits she's a bit of a magpie, so we don't think the sparkle is disappearing from Shade anytime soon.
